Estación Puerto Olivares

Visit Puerto Olivares
privileged site for bird watching

You can reach the facilities either by car or by boat cruising the Paraguay and Manduvirá rivers. During the river journey, the tiny islands dotting the channel reveal themselves—sandy shoals where tropical shorebirds, passerines, toucans, raptors, and other species pause to rest and nest. On the densely vegetated islands, small troops of howler monkeys mingle with a chorus of neotropical birds that depend on this habitat.

Arriving at the Puerto Olivares complex, you’ll follow a roughly 1.5‑km trail across open scrub and low‑lying vegetation, immersing yourself in the surrounding avian life. The facilities blend seamlessly into the landscape: expansive grasslands dotted with palms give way to pockets of medium‑sized trees and pristine jungle.

Here, rare creatures such as the Urutaú (the “Common Potoo”) find refuge. In short, a visit to Puerto Olivares transports you into one of the few remaining sanctuaries where nature’s magic unfolds in full splendor.

Paraguay itself is an emerging destination brimming with hidden gems. Its geology creates a striking contrast: lush eastern grasslands meet arid western salt marshes, all under a hot, humid climate. Because it sits at the crossroads of Brazil, Bolivia, and Argentina, the country is often called the “Heart of South America.”

This land‑locked nation offers travelers a rare glimpse of some of the world’s oldest wildlife thriving in untouched ecosystems. At Estación Puerto Olivares you’ll enjoy high‑quality, expedition‑style adventures that showcase the very best of Paraguay’s natural wonders.

About "Estación Puerto Olivares" History

The estate originally belonged to Doña Juana Pabla Carrillo, wife of former Paraguayan president Don Carlos Antonio López. During López’s 1841 administration, Paraguay experienced an unprecedented economic boom.

He secured landmark trade agreements—Brazil in 1850, Great Britain, France and the United States in 1853, and Argentina in 1856—and poured resources into national infrastructure, launching a new railway line and establishing steam‑powered river routes. López also championed public education, expanding primary schools and reopening the seminary he once attended, which lifted literacy rates across the country.

On the banks of the Paraguay River, the family erected a private oratory that was completed in 1863. Though Don Carlos never lived to see its dedication, his son Francisco Solano López performed the inaugural ceremony. The original bell still hangs in its tower, ringing flawlessly to this day.

In 1918 the property passed into the hands of the Rafaela Machain de Guanes family, who retain ownership today.

In 2017 the family transformed the ranch into a conservation area focused on wilderness preservation and nature‑based tourism, now operating as Estación Puerto Olivares.
